Our focus will be on representation within the context of American politics, but a few of our discussions will take us beyond the U.S. Most of our focus will be at the national level, but some state-level and local-level issues will arise from time to time as well. Of course, all of the topics we cover could be tested in other countries or at the sub-national level. The idea of representation is fundamental to democratic politics. In fact, many discussions anddebates at a normative level focus on the nature and quality of representation that is provided by any particular system of government or group of government leaders. Thus, I feel that in this course we will be focusing on what is really at the heart of democratic politics. This should be fun and intellectually stimulating, but it won’t be easy! Our first challenge will be to develop one or more working definitions of representation. What do we mean when we say representation? How could we evaluate whether representation of one form or another is in fact taking place? Are different definitions of representation compatible with each other or do they articulate competing or conflicting goals and interests? These questions will frame the entire course.

It's a riveting triumph of will and focus, hard work and raw talent. If Woods's game raises the bar - and there's no doubt that it has - Rosaforte's chronicle can't quite match the standards set by his subject. Yes, the book is well reported and certainly readable, but it seems rushed, a recapitulation churned out to be timely, rather than an analysis of a phenomenon that might be timeless in itself. Perhaps it's just too soon to expect that in a book, but if Tiger can raise the bar on the course, there's no reason the scribes who have him in their sights can't raise it some, as well.

With the help of Troy's would-be actress neighbor, Paul is able to make the identification, but then his troubles really begin. Accosted by two strange men named Giles and Jumbo, Paul finds himself transported via black limousine through the underbelly of New York. He finds out more about his son and his son's life than he ever wanted to know. Ray and Paul Tatum are very different men, both caught up in worlds they hardly understand. Pearson's writing, funny and taut, will make it difficult for any reader to put down the story of these likable men.

And Paludan proceeds to state the obvious, that Lincoln was responsible for two enormous accomplishments that are part of folk legend as well as fact. He saved the Union and he freed the slaves. No other president did so much in so little time, and Paludan explains why. As a result, within its limited confines, this book is excellent!
